"Chances are you’re thinking of St. John, says the island's page on the Department of Tourism's new Web site for the territory.
Formally launched Wednesday, the $250,000 project replaces a site which was first posted in 2001 - at a cost of $700,000.
There are dedicated pages and directories for water and land activities, shopping, as well as a guide to restaurants and beaches. The home page greets visitors with an attractive layout, lots of islandy photos, as well as an animated dancing Mocko Jumbie and a fluttering bananaquit.
Tourism commissioner Beverly Nicholson-Doty said, “We felt that this website had to provide enough information so that someone visiting our site could plan their entire vacation.” Even so, there are miles to go before Tourism sleeps. The “Where to Stay” page offers choices from among small inns and b&b’s, villas, resorts and hotels, and campgrounds. Eventually, Nicholson-Doty said the site will let people book their stays along with some activities, too.
