Today's the day RealNetworks is expected to take another bite out of Apple and its iTunes Music Store. The New York Post reports Real will announce subscribers to the monthly subscription music service, Rhapsody, will be able to download songs to portable music players. RealNetworks will make the announcement this morning at Radio City Music Hall. "Portability is the single biggest threat to Steve Jobs' iTunes," said one high-level record executive, the Post reported.
Early this morning, the company said its new deal to make Rhapsody available to Comcast cable subscribers has boosted usage. Real announced it now has more than 1 million subscribers to premium subscription music services, including Rhapsody service and commercial- free Internet radio services. Real's chairman Rob Glaser called the news a "critical mass milestone in digital music."
