"Take Back Your TV", per Yahoo Go. Om Malik broke the story .
Launched in the past 12 hours, Go is a free software download that lets you manage photos, search videos online and on your PC (Sorry, Charlie, no Macs), listen to music, record and play back TV shows, provided you've got a TV tuner card. Dave Zatz has a review .
Hmmm. Sounds a bit like Microsoft's Media Center Edition, doesn't it? And Apple Computer's Front Row. All this time, we thought it was Google that was competing with the techies from Redmond. Turns out they're all trying to gang up on Bill Gates.
Yahoo Go owes its life to technology developed over the past three years by Meedio LLC. Yahoo announced its acquisition of Meedio 8 days ago. Earlier this year, Yahoo said "Go' was coming, and Meedio helped it deliver.
Yahoo Go is free, which is a tough price to beat. But as Thomas Hawk points out, Microsoft's Media Center is essentially free, too, since it ships on capably-configured PCs out of the box. You can't buy the software. It'll be free next January, too, when Microsoft's new Vista operating system ships with MCE built-on.
Wanna bet Microsoft also bolts on Slingbox-like tools, to let you watch what's on your PC anywhere you go?
SigMoney may be one of a few people unhappy this morning at the debut of Yahoo Go. "I paid $44.95 for the MEEDIO PRO back on Feb. 8, now Yahoo gobbles ‘em up and it’s FREE. Yeah, that blows, maybe I can hit MEEDIO up for a refund."
